Volunteer Opportunities

WE NEED YOU!

Beacon could not provide its comprehensive services without the support of volunteers. Thank you for considering these rewarding positions.  Generally, we ask that volunteers commit to a weekly two-hour shift for a minimum of three months.

Primary Volunteer Roles

  • Kitchen Volunteers work in our day center kitchen between 7:30 am and 2:30 pm. Duties include helping with meal preparation, serving, managing the coffee station, and clean up.
  • Hospitality Volunteers work at our day center between 8 am and 4 pm. Duties include managing guests’ mail, signing up guests for services, distributing supplies, assisting with long-term storage and day storage, and fielding a variety of phone calls and in-person inquiries.

Other Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Job Search Coaches help job seekers at our day center and at our emergency shelter.  Coaches will assist with online job searches, resumes, and submitting applications.
  • Emergency Shelter Volunteers work at the emergency shelter from 5 to 7 pm to help support staff for the busy first two hours of the shelter opening.
  • Donations Organizers assist with sorting and organizing donations of clothes, hygiene products, blankets, and towels.

Group Volunteer Opportunities:

If your organization is interested in participating in a one-time or ongoing volunteer activity as a group, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator to explore options.  Building maintenance and grounds upkeep projects are available for all sites. Providing a breakfast or a lunch at our day center’s kitchen is also an option.

Volunteers Opportunities for Drivers

  • Bagel Pick up and delivery to our day center’s kitchen by 7:30 am
  • Donut Pick up and delivery to our day center’s kitchen by 7:30 am
  • Goodwill Delivery – weekly pick up of unneeded donation items to take to Goodwill.

WISH LIST

We are available to receive donations at 620 S. Walnut Street during our open hours (8am to 4pm, Monday – Friday). Please call if those times are not accessible for you. We strongly ask that do not drop off donations outside our business hours as it often results in a significant mess for our staff to clean up the next day. Because of storage issues, we are limited in our ability to accept items not on this list or items out of the season they are appropriate for. We also specialize in day-to-day clothing, so would prefer not to receive dresses, suit jackets and pants, ties, nice shoes, jewelry, and other fancier clothing. If you have a gift you’d like to offer that is not on this list, please call us at (812) 334-5734 to see if we have a guest who needs it. You can also visit our Amazon wish list by clicking here.
